sonny boy
“We first met Sonny Boy when he was just a teenager working out of his dads shop in So.Cal. We instantly became close friends and could tell that he was an incredibly talented artist and painter.
When I found a metallic brown '77 GMC Vandura as my daily driver, Matt and I instantly knew who we needed to paint it! It was Sonny Boy that blew everyone's mind when we unveiled the DicE Van to the world!!
We have featured numerous bikes with 'Sonny Boy' paint and/or pinstriping over the years and his style is second to none.
We're happy to say that Sonny Boy has been a part of the DicE family for decades and we are extremely proud of the man and artist he's become.”

DicE: When we heard the good people at American Metal Customs were doing a collab shirt with our dear old pal, Sonny Boy we hopped at the chance to reach out to him to ask about the collab and introduce him to anyone who may not know him.
Yes yes Sonny mate, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us. Let’s start by introducing you to the world. Who are you and what
SB: My name is Sonny, aka Sonny Boy.
I’m an artist born and raised in Los Angeles, specializing in pinstriping and custom lettering for over 22 years.
My work blends traditional hand-painted techniques with modern design tools to offer a wide range of artistic services—including brand identity, graphic design, and mural art. Whether it’s paint or pixels, I bring the same passion and attention to detail to every project.
DM: How did you get into your craft?
SB: I got my start at a young age, spending time in the garage with my dad and grandpa, wrenching on motorcycles and custom painting them. When I was 11, I was deeply inspired by a local pin-striper named Dennis Jones. I remember watching him hand-letter and pinstripe my dad’s work trucks—it completely captured my attention and imagination.
From that moment on, my enthusiasm for hand-painted art took off. I spent countless hours practicing, developing my skills through repetition and curiosity. Over time, my passion grew into a relentless drive to learn and master different mediums of hand-painted art, like gold leafing and sign painting.
DM: What was the process behind the American Metal Custom collaboration?
SB: Lately, I’ve been focusing on digital art, honing my skills using Procreate on the iPad Pro. It’s been an incredibly useful and versatile tool, especially for designing logos, sign painting, and custom graphics for my clients. Every line and detail in my digital work is still hand-drawn—just with a stylus pen instead of a brush.
The guys at American Metal Whiskey were awesome to work with and gave me full artistic freedom and trust to create designs that truly represented their aesthetic and brand. That kind of collaboration makes the creative process more exciting and rewarding for both the client and the artist.
DM: When Matt and Dean asked you to paint the DicE van did you realize what a pain in the ass it would be?
SB: I did realize it was going to be a MAJOR pain in the ass! Love can make you do crazy things! Hahaha… I love Matt and Dean and would do anything for them…… Well, almost anything.
DM: No interview would be complete without the most pressing question - Favourite Morrisey song?
SB: “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want”.
Does a Smiths song count, it’s still counts as Morrisey, right?
DM: Absolutely, haha. Cheers Sonny, take it easy.
